The Pennington County State’s Attorney’s Office, in collaboration with families of murder victims, will host a vigil and brief program in observance of the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims on Wednesday, September 25, 2024.
The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. on the front lawn of the Pennington County Administration Building, providing a meaningful space for families and friends to pay tribute to loved ones lost to violence.

Families of murder victims are invited to participate by reading their loved one’s name, bringing a photo, and sharing a moment of reflection as a bell is rung in their memory.
The event is intended to provide a sense of community and support for families while also recognizing the lasting impact of these tragedies.
In 2007, Congress designated September 25th as the National Day of Remembrance for Murder Victims.
The date was chosen in honor of Lisa Hullinger, a 19-year-old student who was murdered while studying in Germany in 1978.
Lisa’s parents, Robert and Charlotte Hullinger of Cincinnati, later formed Parents of Murdered Children (POMC), a support organization for families affected by violent crime.
The annual observance serves as a day to reflect, remember, and honor the lives of those taken by violence.
