Nellie Willhite – South Dakota’s First Woman Pilot

March 2, 2018 @ 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

The Journey Museum and Learning Center is celebrating Women’s History Month with a series of programs honoring outstanding South Dakota women. The first program in our “her-storic” lineup is a Turtle Soup Lecture on Nellie Willhite. Set for Noon on Friday, March 2nd, join Norma Kraemer as she shares the incredible story of Nellie Willhite, South Dakota’s first woman pilot and the first deaf woman to earn a pilot’s license.

“Nellie Willhite” Turtle Soup will be held in the Stanford Adelstein Gallery located on the main floor of the museum. In 1928, Nellie Zabel Willhite earned her pilot’s license. She went on to become a commercial pilot overcoming a variety of handicaps. Her career inspired future generations to reach for the sky.

Author of South Dakota’s First Century of Flight, Norma Kraemer is a longtime pilot and aircraft builder. She was a friend of Nellie Zabel Willhite. Kraemer is a historian, with a special interest in aviation history.

Feed your mind and your belly with the Turtle Soup Lecture Series. Every Turtle Soup features a presentation on historic figures who influenced Black Hills history and includes soup from Angel’s Catering. Admission for Turtle Soups are included in the regular cost of admission to the Journey Museum & Learning Center.
